Troops were called in with orders to fire on the rioters; 22 were killed and 26 injured. May 13, 1846: President James K. Polk and Congress declare war on Mexico. More than eleven thousand U.S. troops lost their lives during the controversial two-year war. The conflict led to the annexation of lands that covered parts of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Oklahoma. The war ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. May 20, 1862: President Abraham Lincoln signs The Homestead Act, which allowed American citizens to make a claim of up to 160 acres of western land owned by the U.S. government. The cost per acre was $1.25 and had be lived on and cultivated for 5 years to make the contract binding. May 28, 1961: After reading about a group of students in Portugal being arrested, British lawyer, Peter Berenson establishes Amnesty International. Amnesty International now works for the legal rights of people from more than 150 countries. Their missions include, stopping torture, fighting death penalties, freeing prisoners of conscience and guaranteeing human rights for women
